The south coast: Ornos, Agios Ioannis, Psarou, Platis Gialos
This is where most of the large hotels sit, and it is the easiest part of the island for a same-day booking. Reception desks here handle guest arrivals constantly and nobody asks questions; you give a name, that is the whole procedure. Drive times to Chora run around twenty minutes in June and closer to forty on an August night, with the Ornos junction acting as the bottleneck.
The south coast is also the wind-proof side. The meltemi blows for long stretches of July and August. When it does, Psarou, Platis Gialos and Paraga stay usable while the north empties out. If your day plan collapses because of wind, this is where it lands.
The north side: Panormos, Ftelia, Agios Sostis
The north is beautiful, quieter, and completely at the mercy of the weather. On a still day it is the best part of the island. On a windy one it is unusable by lunchtime. Villas up here are scattered, unlit at night and named rather than numbered. A map pin plus the villa name plus a gate code is not optional. It is the difference between a companion arriving on time and circling a dirt track for twenty minutes.
Book north-side appointments with more lead time than you think you need. There is no passing traffic to fall back on.
Ano Mera and the eastern beaches
Ano Mera, Kalafatis, Kalo Livadi, Elia and Lia are the far side of the island. Everything here is a real drive, and it is the one part of Mykonos where an appointment should be planned as an evening rather than squeezed between two other things. Villa dinners and wedding receptions in this area routinely run past three in the morning, and transport back is the part guests forget to arrange.
Arriving: airport and the New Port
Arrivals come in waves. Flights into the airport and ferries into the New Port at Tourlos land large groups at the same moment, and every one of those people wants a car immediately. The island has famously few taxis, and the rank at Fabrika builds a queue on any August night. If you are landing and want to arrange something for the same evening, call while you are still waiting for luggage, not after you have checked in.
How the season changes availability
June is the comfortable month. The beach clubs are open, the town is alive, and same-day bookings are straightforward. July tightens week by week. In August, availability is limited by logistics rather than by people. Roads, transfers, time windows. The public-holiday week in mid-August is the busiest of the year. September is the connoisseurs' month: the heat drops, Chora becomes walkable again, the sea is still warm and the diary opens back up. The season winds down through the first half of October.
What to say when you call
- Your area and the type of place: hotel with a reception desk, private villa, rented apartment, or a boat in the port.
- Start time and a realistic duration. Two hours is a sensible minimum on this island.
- A map pin, the villa or hotel name, and any gate or barrier code.
- Any preferences you have, stated plainly at the time of booking rather than later.
- The name you will use at reception, if you are in a hotel.
Discretion, in practice
Discretion on Mykonos is less about secrecy than about not creating a scene. In the big south-coast hotels an arrival is routine. In a rented studio in Chora, where the owner may live on the same staircase, ordinary good manners cover everything. In a staffed villa, telling the house that you are expecting a guest removes any conversation at the gate before it starts. Dress on the island is relaxed but put together. Linen, clean shoes. A couple walking to a bar in Little Venice looks like every other couple there. That is exactly the point.

Plan the evening backwards. Decide when you want the appointment to end, subtract the drive, subtract the queue for a car, and call with those numbers in hand. Guests who do that have a good night on Mykonos. Guests who apply city habits to an island with one main road and thirty taxis spend the evening waiting at a junction instead.
