Greece is one of the few European countries where brothels are legal, licensed and inspected, and Athens has had them in the same streets for a century. That makes “brothels Athens”, and the Greek words for it, some of the largest searches in the country. Most of the pages that answer them are either tourist rumour or advertising. The legal houses
Licensed brothels, οίκοι ανοχής in Greek, operate under a 1999 law that requires a permit, a fixed premises away from schools and churches, and registered workers with regular health checks. In practice the permits are hard to get and most of the houses that exist are in the traditional districts: Filis street and its side streets north of Omonia, and the blocks around Metaxourgeio and Iasonos street. A legal house is a ground-floor flat with a red or blue light, a doorwoman, and a price posted at the door. The visit is short, the price is low by escort standards, and the transaction is exactly what it looks like.
The illegal studios
Far more numerous. Unlicensed flats advertised as “studios” or “massage” on the classified sites, often in Kypseli, Patisia and around Syngrou, some with one woman and some with several. Illegal does not automatically mean dangerous, but it means no inspection, no recourse and a real chance that the price at the door is not the price in the advert. The bait-and-switch and the sudden “extra” are the classic problems.
Reviews, stories and forums
Greek forums carry decades of brothel reviews and stories, some accurate, many not. They are useful for spotting a house that has gone bad and useless for choosing a good one, because turnover is high and the forum lags. Treat a review older than a month as history.
Safety
In a legal house, condoms are mandatory and enforced, and the risks are the usual ones of cash and strangers. In an illegal studio, insist on the same, agree the price before anything, keep your wallet on you, and leave if anything changes. Never follow a street approach to a flat you did not choose. The Filis street area is safe enough by day and rough after midnight; Metaxourgeio is calmer.
Sex clubs, swinger clubs and strip clubs
Different things, often confused in searches. Athens has a few swinger clubs, mostly in the suburbs, that operate legally as private clubs for couples; they are not brothels and do not sell sex. Strip clubs on Syngrou and in the centre sell drinks and dances, and the ones that offer more are the ones to avoid, because that offer is where the overcharging starts. “Backstage” brothels behind clubs are mostly rumour.
How an escort booking differs
An escort comes to you, at your hotel or home, for an hour or an evening, and the transaction is about time and company rather than a fixed act at a fixed door. The price is several times a brothel visit and the experience is not comparable; people who want one rarely want the other.
