Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades and the least concerned with visitors. It grows its own potatoes, makes its own cheese and citrus liqueur, and its mountain villages carry on as if the ferries did not exist. The Chora with its Venetian castle and the long west-coast beaches from Agios Prokopios to Plaka are where the tourists go, and that is where a search for escorts in Naxos becomes a practical question. The shape of the island
Chora is the port and the only real town: the castle hill, the Portara at the end of the causeway, a waterfront of cafés and a warren of lanes behind it. South of town, the beach road runs through Agios Georgios, Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and Plaka, each a strip of hotels, tavernas and beach bars that get progressively quieter. Inland is another island entirely: Halki, Filoti, Apeiranthos, marble villages where a couple driving through is a welcome sight and a lone stranger a curiosity.
Hotels
The beach hotels at Agios Prokopios and Plaka are the anonymous option and the pleasant one; the Naxian Collection and the larger resorts there are used to guests with company. In Chora the small hotels inside the castle are beautiful and observant. The family pensions along Agia Anna are exactly that, family, and the owner will remember your face. Choose the resort strip for a discreet arrival, the castle for a stay as a couple.
Getting a companion to Naxos
Mykonos to Naxos by fast ferry is fifty minutes to an hour and a quarter, several times a day in summer. A companion arrives at Chora on the morning boat and stays two nights or more on a day rate, ferry quoted with the booking. Days and evenings
Naxos is a daytime island. Drive to Halki for the Vallindras distillery and the tavernas under the plane tree, up to Apeiranthos for the marble streets, down to Mikri Vigla for the wind and the emptiest beach. Evenings are gentler: dinner at Axiotissa near Kastraki for the best cooking on the island, or in Chora at Metaxi Mas in the lanes, then a drink at Ocean or Swing on the waterfront. Nobody watches. Naxos has better things to do.
